In the heart of Harlem, where jazz still echoes through brownstone-lined streets and cultural history lives in every corner, Red Rooster stands as more than a restaurant. It's a crossroads of culture, a community anchor, and a living testament to the power of food to heal, connect, and celebrate.
For Chef Ro of Red Rooster, food has always been about more than what's on the plate; it's about the people and the heritage behind every ingredient, every dish, every pour.
From Combat to Culinary Excellence
The foundation for Red Rooster's mission was built at the Culinary Institute of America, where a commitment to celebrating the African Diaspora through food took root. Serving as President of the Black Culinary Society solidified a drive that goes beyond cooking; it's about telling stories of resilience and joy through flavor.
"My journey in the culinary world has always been about more than just the plate; it's about the people and the heritage behind the ingredients," shares the Red Rooster team. After military combat, food became a safe space and a pathway to overcoming PTSD, transforming trauma into purpose, and purpose into excellence.
That healing power of food is woven into every aspect of Red Rooster's identity. The restaurant exists not just to serve exceptional cuisine, but to provide a seat at the table for everyone, ensuring that Black excellence is both seen and tasted.
A Harlem Institution
Red Rooster isn't just located in Harlem, it is Harlem. The restaurant serves as a cultural crossroads where music, art, and soul converge. From the walls adorned with local artwork to the live music that fills the space, every element honors the neighborhood's rich history while pushing the boundaries of modern American comfort food.
The culinary vision draws from deep roots in the community, from judging ProStart competitions to mentoring the next generation of Black chefs. This commitment ensures that every dish served at the Rooster honors Harlem's history while creating new traditions for the future.
"Red Rooster is special because it isn't just a restaurant; it's a community anchor," the team explains. "We are a crossroads of culture, where the music, the art, and the soul of the neighborhood converge."
The Black Girl Magic Connection
The introduction to Black Girl Magic Wines came full circle at The Family Reunion at the Salamander Hotel, hosted by Chef Kwame Onwuachi. Surrounded by Black excellence and culinary mastery, the connection was immediate and undeniable.
"Seeing the brand in that space, surrounded by Black excellence and culinary mastery, it clicked immediately," they recall. "Featuring a Black-owned wine brand like Black Girl Magic isn't just a business decision; it's an alignment of values."
For Red Rooster, carrying the McBride Sisters' wines means more than expanding the wine list. It's about providing a platform for creators who share the same commitment to representation and excellence. It ensures that the wine program is as diverse and intentional as the kitchen.
Currently, Red Rooster proudly features a selection from the McBride Sisters' portfolio, including McBride Sisters Collection Chardonnay, Black Girl Magic Moscato, Red Blend, and Riesling, each one thoughtfully chosen to complement the restaurant's celebration of American comfort food with African Diaspora influences.
Community as North Star
At Red Rooster, community isn't a buzzword; it's a guiding principle, a "North Star" that directs every decision and initiative.
The restaurant shows up as a space of opportunity and activism. Through personal work with the Kota Alliance in Harlem, the team supports women's empowerment and social justice right in their own backyard. Whether through ProStart judging or mentoring young Black culinarians, Red Rooster invests in the pipeline of culinary talent, ensuring the next generation has the support and guidance they need to thrive.
"We are invested in the pipeline of talent," they emphasize. "When guests visit us, I want them to feel a sense of homecoming, a place where they are celebrated, seen, and nourished both physically and spiritually."
That sense of homecoming is palpable. Red Rooster has become a gathering place for locals and visitors alike, a space where people from all backgrounds can break bread together and experience the richness of Harlem's culture.
Why Representation Matters
For the team at Red Rooster, spotlighting Black entrepreneurship isn't optional; it's essential.
"Spotlighting Black-owned businesses is about correcting the narrative and building generational wealth," they explain. "For too long, our contributions to the culinary and viticulture worlds were kept in the shadows. By highlighting stories like mine and the McBride Sisters, we show the world that excellence has no bounds."
When you support a Black entrepreneur, you're supporting an entire ecosystem of community, mentorship, and reclaimed history. You're investing in a future where the next generation sees themselves represented at every level of the culinary world, from the kitchen to the vineyard.
Red Rooster embodies this philosophy in action. Through their commitment to mentorship, community investment, and providing platforms for Black-owned brands like Black Girl Magic Wines, they're not just running a restaurant; they're building legacy.
A Table Set for Everyone
The mission is clear and unwavering: "My mission is to plate our heritage with pride and pour our history with intention, creating a table where community and excellence always have a seat."
This philosophy manifests in every aspect of the Red Rooster experience. From the carefully curated menu that honors African Diaspora foodways to the wine list that champions Black-owned brands, from the mentorship programs that invest in young chefs to the community partnerships that strengthen Harlem, everything is intentional, everything has purpose.
When you walk through Red Rooster's doors, you're not just having a meal. You're participating in a larger movement of representation, excellence, and community building. You're experiencing what it means to truly honor heritage while creating space for the future.
And when you raise a glass of Black Girl Magic wine at Red Rooster's table, you're toasting to more than just a good meal, you're celebrating the power of Black entrepreneurship, the resilience of community, and the joy that comes when excellence and intention meet.
