In 2019, “The McBride Sisters SHE CAN Fund” was created to promote the professional advancement of women in the wine industry in a concerted effort to help close the gender and race gap.
In 2020, global changes resulting from COVID-19 have hit all businesses but have been especially destructive to Black-owned small businesses.
#SHECANThrive2020 Fund and Grant Program is helping scale Black women-owned businesses with a $10,000 investment and supporting services in the areas of entrepreneurship that Black women find to be most challenging to fund.

Frères Branchiaux Candle Co. is a home fragrance company based in the Washington, DC Metro area created and managed by 3 brothers, Collin (15), Ryan (12), and Austin Gill (10). In October 2017, the young Gill brothers wanted more allowance to purchase video games. Mama and Dad Gill told them that they had maxed out their toy allowance and to either “get a job or start a business” if they wanted more money. They decided to start a business. Mama Gill attended a candle-making workshop and then took those skills home and taught the brothers. After a few weeks of fragrant trial and error, the brothers finally figured out the best scent, wax, and wick combinations to create candles that would inspire and delight others. As well as earning money, they donate 10% of their profits to homeless shelters nationwide.
Using soy and coconut wax, the Gill brothers design scent experiences that are unique and one of a kind. The candles are hand poured in small batches, hand packaged, and curated with care in the Frères Branchiaux warehouse. The brothers have also added accessories such as room sprays, diffusers, bath salts, candle snuffers, and wick cutters. Frères Branchiaux candles and home fragrances help savvy, eco-conscious consumers beautify and enhance their environments with lush and unique fragrances that are vegan luxury.

Her entrepreneurial spirit and her passion for all things Harlem inspired her to establish Harlem’s first ever indoor cycling studio dedicated to the passion, the soul, and the hustle that defines Harlem. Regine fell in love with wine during a college study abroad trip to Besançon, France. Bitten by the wine bug early on, she began her career in the beverage industry as a salesperson for a wine distributor. While in this role, Rousseau noticed how the barrier of “wine speak” formed a disconnect between wine professionals and consumers. Inspired to bridge the gap, Shall We Wine was born. Wine grew from a hobby to a job to a passion, so when she was laid off in 2013, she saw a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to center her focus on Shall We Wine.
This love for wine morphed into a love and appreciation for other beverages across the alcohol vertical. Regine has received her Level II certification from the International Sommelier Guild and an Executive Bourbon Steward from Stave and Thief Society. She believes in the wine & spirits experience like an artform. An immersive practice — which translates into the world of art, music and poetry.
Shall We Wine is the brainchild of CEO Regine T. Rousseau. Born in Chicago, raised in Haiti and a trailblazer in her own right, Regine is a published author, art collector, business owner and entrepreneur. A passionate beverage professional with an innate drive to connect with people through food and beverage experiences, Regine has made it her mission to make beverages and beverage knowledge easily accessible, instead of arduous and restrictive.

Pretty Please Teethers, LLC
Our story is simple. It started with one mission in mind: to find safe, stylish, natural handmade items for my little one-- something that fit my modern and minimalist style but was functional. It felt like it should be simple but was, surprisingly, harder than expected. Being pregnant with my youngest and on bed rest with Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG, or severe morning sickness), I had a lot of spare time on my hands; and since I couldn't find what I wanted elsewhere, I decided to make my own. Since then, Pretty Please Teethers has been designing and hand-making products that babies will enjoy and we, the parents, will love.

LaShelle's School of Dance was founded in the summer of 2004 in Detroit, MI. Founder and CEO, Wilkanda “LaShelle” Goodman, began dancing at age three and continued all the way through college. After earning a B.A. in Education from Ferris State University and becoming a high school math teacher, she realized the lack of dance and performing arts opportunities in general for inner-city youth. So in 2004, alongside her family and friends, she decided to found LaShelle's School of Dance. With humble beginnings at an old church building on W. 7 Mile Rd., about 25 students and a lot of “heart,” LSO Dance was born!
Since its inception, LaShelle's School of Dance has remained committed to educating students of all ages in the art of dance at affordable prices. Far too often, gifted dancers are unable to attend studios or further their dance education because of financial barriers. With over 200 students of various ages, skill levels and socio-economic backgrounds, we are proud to provide our dancers with a variety of classes at minimal costs. Also, as a family owned business, we do everything with a personal touch and value all members of our “LaShelle's Family” not only as dancers but as people. The maximum class size is 8 students, but no matter what size a class may be, we give every dancer the necessary personal attention.
Our founder and lead esthetician, Angela McTair, struggled with chronic, confidence-destroying acne well into her adult years. As a scientist, she knew there were ways to chemically balance and control the skin, so she tested product after product in hopes of healing her own skin. After she discovered that most products were filled with irritating ingredients that only worsened the situation, she set off on a mission.
After years of study, an aesthetics licensure, and certifications in chemical peeling, microdermabrasion, laser and manual lymphatic drainage, Angela founded Harlem Zen. Bringing together nature and technology, Harlem Zen uses cold-pressed organic products and simple, inflammation-reducing formulas and the most advanced laser technology to soothe the skin and ease it into submission.

When I was a little girl living in Guyana, South America, my mom used to take me to see my Great Aunt Jean, who was a great seamstress. I still remember how she pinned and gathered the fabric to create style and bounce, all while holding animated and entertaining conversations with my mom. I draw my inspiration for color, texture and patterns from memories of my Uncle Reggie's (Great Aunt Jean's husband) garden. He took pride in his garden, and the vibrant colors, textures and patterns of the fruits, flowers and vegetables still lingers in my mind. I apply the same meticulous care and love to my pieces, that Uncle Reggie applied to his garden.
That was just the beginning of my love for art, design and color. After graduating from college, I started Yinibini Baby! Organic cotton clothing blanks are screen-printed by hand with my original illustrations and accessories such as bibs are handmade and screen-printed by hand. I also use organic cotton patterned fabrics to make bibs and other accessories.
